Computers have become a large part of our everyday activities, being used more and more for
paying bills, research, school projects, shopping, even going to the library.
However
with the convenience also comes exposure. The threat of someone hacking your computer
and getting your personal information, viruses that destroy your work, etc. is a
problem facing us all. Web space is virtually unregulated, with almost no laws governing
usage and content of websites.
As parents we recognize that our CHILDREN ARE AT
A BIGGER RISK from going to inappropriate web sites, giving out personal information
to a "chat friend", or even worse, running into sexual predators posing as "chat buddies".
Our children have been empowered WITH A RIGHT TO PRIVACY, IN A WORLD THAT
IS NOT PRIVATE. There are already a number of reliable solutions available in these
areas to help us
protect our children and we highly endorse their use.

There is another risk to our children, a passive
risk, which computer over use has caused. It has been recognized that the lack of
physical activity is harming our children and as parents, we should not allow this
to happen.
It is difficult, if not impossible to monitor our children's computer
time, especially when this will undoubtedly result in conflict with our children.
The computer is thought of as an educational tool rationalizing that it is good
for them, but
anything is excess is harmful.
It is our job, to protect our children
by teaching moderation,
and to turn OFF the computer, which is not so easily done,
especially in the two parent job families of today and with the possibly that our
children have become addicted to computer games or online chats.
